On the Ten Fetters
[13] Bhikkhus, these are the ten saṅyojanas (fetters, bonds). What are the ten?
There are the five lower fetters, and the five higher fetters.
The Five Lower Fetters
What are the five lower fetters?
- sakkāya-diṭṭhi — the view that the five khandhas are “self” or “mine”.
- vicikicchā — doubt regarding Dhamma.
- sīlabbata-parāmāsa — clinging to wrong observances and rituals, grasping at practices that do not lead to liberation.
- kāma-chanda — sensual desire for sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tangibles.
- vyāpāda — ill will, anger, resentment, or hostility.
These are the five lower fetters.
The Five Higher Fetters
What are the five higher fetters?
- rūpa-rāga — attachment to the rūpa-jhānas, attachment to existence in the rūpa realms.
- arūpa-rāga — attachment to the arūpa-jhānas, attachment to existence in the arūpa realms.
- māna — conceit, self-exaltation or comparison.
- uddhacca — restlessness.
- avijjā — ignorance, not-knowing the true nature of phenomena.
These are the five higher fetters.
Bhikkhus, these are the ten saṅyojanas.
